Geographical provenance
The indication provided by the pupils themselves lacks consistency. It is
however possible to conclude, as it might have been expected, that the majority
of attendants came from France, even though 183 foreigners coming from 18
countries are making up 19% of the total.

Attendants from Belgium or Italy, for instance, two countries whose borders kept
changing during the period, were also listed as French, since their region of
birth had been integrated to the Empire; conversely, individuals indicating a
foreign birth may belong to families emigrated during the Revolution.

Within the French contingent, 15% to 20% of attendants came from Paris, though
the latter figure should be taken as a maximum. In fact, the majority of pupils
came from all corner of France, to the extent that each department was
represented by at least one attendant.

After Paris, Normandy, Bourgogne, Lyon and the Southwest were the major
contributors to the core.
